Why are the Rs 2000 denomination banknotes being withdrawn?

The introduction of the Rs 2000 denomination banknote in 2016 was primarily aimed at meeting the immediate currency requirements after the withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes. However, as the objective has been fulfilled and an adequate supply of banknotes in other denominations is available, the printing of Rs 2000 banknotes was ceased in 2018-19. Most of these banknotes were issued before March 2017 and have already reached their expected lifespan of 4-5 years. Considering the limited usage of this denomination in transactions, the RBI has decided to withdraw the Rs 2,000 banknotes in alignment with its Clean Note Policy.

What is the Clean Note Policy?

The Clean Note Policy is an initiative by the RBI to ensure the availability of good quality banknotes for the public. By removing worn-out notes and maintaining the circulation of fresh and clean banknotes, the RBI aims to enhance the overall currency experience for individuals and businesses.

Absolutely. The general public can continue using Rs 2000 banknotes for their day-to-day transactions. These banknotes are still acceptable as a means of payment. However, individuals are encouraged to deposit or exchange them at banks before the specified deadline of September 30, 2023.

Individuals holding Rs 2,000 banknotes are requested to approach their respective bank branches to deposit or exchange them. All banks will offer this service until September 30, 2023. Furthermore, the 19 Regional Offices (ROs) of the RBI will also provide the option to exchange these banknotes.
