Nissan’s Kicks is the brand’s solution for the ever-growing compact SUV segment in India, after having sold the Terrano SUV for years. But now since the Kicks is a breath of fresh air, it is here to take on the likes of the new Hyundai Creta which has ruled the roost ever since the first-generation model. Design

Visually, the new Creta tends to take a while to grow on you. It is attractive alright, but the cascading grille and split headlight design can divide opinion to an extent. But the floating roof, split DRLs and stylish rear end do tend to add to its appeal. The new Creta is also wider, lower and longer than the model it replaces.

We think the Kicks is the nicer looking of the two, with its muscular structure, V-motion grille, those prominent wheel arches, the boomerang taillights and that rake in the rear windscreen. The Nissan is undoubtedly an attractive SUV, and we think the Creta pales in comparison because of its somewhat unique, not to everyone’s taste styling.

Interiors

The moment you step into the Nissan Kicks, you’re greeted by a whole lot of leather, with a dual-tone brown and black theme adding to a premium feel. The 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system looks beautiful on the dashboard and functions efficiently too. The instrument cluster features a digital speedometer along with an analogue tachometer and fuel gauge.

The levels of quality leave no room for complaints. At the front, the seats are very comfy and supportive; so is the rear bench, and there is ample legroom for three occupants. Boot space isn’t the best in this segment. Even in the Creta, the fit and finish are excellent. The cabin feels upmarket, and it gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

There’s liberal use of black and beige in the cabin with aluminium inserts as well. The small steering feels nice to grip, and there’s a digital screen behind the steering. The cooled front seats offer excellent comfort and under-thigh support. There’s a generous amount of legroom and headroom at the rear. The boot is reasonably large.

Features

In the Creta, you get features like powered mirrors, Bose sound system, auto headlamps, smartphone connectivity, ambient lighting, BlueLink connectivity, wireless charging and an integrated air purifier.

The Kicks, on the other hand, features 360-degree camera and display, front fog lamps with cornering function, rear fog lamps, optional dual-tone paint scheme, leather upholstery with double stitching.

Performance & Handling

The Kicks uses a 1.5-litre DCi K9K engine that churns out 109bhp and 240Nm of torque. The engine is very refined, and performance is more than adequate, and the SUV has a strong mid-range, making overtaking a breeze. The clutch is on the heavy side, and there is some turbo lag. The suspension is very pliant and absorbs everything that comes in its way.

Pushed hard around corners, you will hardly notice any body roll. The new Creta comes with a 1.5-litre U2 CRDi engine paired to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The engine produces 113bhp and 250Nm of torque.

Even the Creta is very refined, and while there may be turbo lag, the engine linearly delivers power. The clutch feels smooth to work, the steering has a fair bit of weight to it, and body roll, while not absent, is masked well.

According to comparison, new Creta may score on a roomy upmarket cabin, and a long list of features, but one has also to remember that they’ve got an excellent aftersales service – something lacking with Nissan.
